Children and Hunger:
Child Mortality: Approximately 45% of deaths among children under the
age of 5 are linked to undernutrition. This statistic highlights the
severe impact of hunger on young lives.
Stunting and Wasting: Stunting affects an estimated 149 million children
under 5, indicating chronic malnutrition. Wasting (low weight for
height) is another critical issue affecting millions of children
globally.
Food Waste:
Global Issue: An estimated 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted globally
each year, accounting for about one-third of all food produced for human
consumption.
Disparity: Food waste in developed countries (222 million tons) almost
equals the entire net food production of Sub-Saharan Africa (230 million
tons).
Global Undernourishment:
Current Statistics: As of 2022, about 828 million people worldwide are
undernourished. This represents approximately 10% of the global
population, showing that hunger is a widespread and critical issue.
Food Insecurity: Nearly 2.3 billion people experience moderate or severe
food insecurity. This means they lack reliable access to sufficient
quantities of affordable, nutritious food.
